Car rental: tips for a successful vacation

WHO TO CONTACT FOR A RENTAL?

Rental is possible from professional rental companies who offer different categories of vehicles, depending on your expectations. The latest trend: individuals also rent their vehicles.

From the moment the vehicle meets your expectations and the desired use, it is imperative to establish a contract and read the rental conditions, if they exist.

WHAT CONDITIONS MUST THE DRIVER MEET?

In general, depending on the vehicle rented, the driver must:

  • have a driving license, recognized and valid;
  • have the category of license required to drive this vehicle;
  • fulfill the conditions of age and years of license requested by the lessor;
  • pay the rental with a means of payment in his name.

If there are several drivers, remember to declare them for insurance questions and support by the rental company in an accident. This option is generally paid, and depending on the drivers’ profile, the price may be increased.

IS THERE A PREFERRED MEANS OF PAYMENT?

The lessor must accept all payment methods unless he informs the lessee by means, in particular, of the special conditions of sale.

In general, the rental companies require the use of a bank card, in your name, for the payment of the rental and the security deposit (this sum is intended to cover additional rental costs or possible damages). Please note, not all bank cards are accepted. Check this information before signing the contract.

WHAT ARE THE LESSOR’S MAIN OBLIGATIONS?

The supplied vehicle must be operating correctly and comply with the order selection.

If the lessor cannot return the agreed vehicle (or of an equivalent category is indicated in the conditions of sale), you can:

  • cancel the rental and get a refund;
  • claim a premium vehicle free of charge;
  • benefit from a price adjustment if the vehicle is of a lower range.

WHAT SHOULD THE LESSOR DELIVER TO THE TENANT?

Depending on the destination country, the tenant must ensure that he has the mandatory administrative documents such as the registration certificate (original or copy), the insurance certificate, and, depending on the technical inspection. Ditto for compulsory equipment (such as triangle, vest, breathalyzer) to avoid any verbalization.

If you need specific equipment (child seat, tires), remember to indicate this information when ordering. Please note, the lessor is not required to make them available to you or, if he offers them, may invoice you for them.

HOW DOES THE STATE OF PLAY WORK?

The tenant must make a careful inspection of the vehicle’s condition (interior/exterior, above / below) and report the slightest defects, scratches, stains, or impacts, or even take a few photos.

  • It is better to check the vehicle, if possible, in natural light (while avoiding the end of the day).
  • If the lessor gives you a pre-filled inventory, you must immediately have all copies corrected for unreported damage.
  • Remember to carefully keep the signed inventory of fixtures.

DO I NEED TO INSURE THE RENTAL VEHICLE?

As soon as a vehicle is in circulation, it must be insured. Generally, the lessee is required to have minimum compulsory insurance with the lessor’s insurer. This insurance is intended to cover material damage or bodily injury that the driver could cause to his passengers or third parties. This means that if the tenant’s liability is incurred, the damage will not be covered under this insurance).

The lessor can offer insurance for drivers and passengers (against accidents caused, assistance, taking charge of personal effects, buy-back or reduction of the excess, etc.). These cannot be forced on you. Think carefully before refusing.

IS IT NORMAL FOR A DEDUCTIBLE TO BE CLAIMED WHILE DAMAGES ARE COVERED BY INSURANCE?

The rental contract generally provides a deductible, payable by the tenant, if the rented car is damaged or stolen. Its amount depends on the category of the rented vehicle and the duration of the rental. This amount is indicated in the rental agreement.

Because this deductible can be more or less substantial, it may be interesting to subscribe to a redemption option or a reduction in its amount. This service is often offered to you by bank card insurance or is included in the rental contract. Inquire!

WHAT HAPPENS IF AN INFRINGEMENT IS COMMITTED?

Not having to assume the consequences of an infringement, the lessor has no choice but to designate the lessee for the infringements committed during the rental. The latter must assume the resulting consequences (including impoundment costs).

Please note, the lessor may charge you management fees for processing the ticket received if the general conditions of sale provide for it.

ON RETURNING THE VEHICLE IS IT NECESSARY TO MAKE AN OVERVIEW?

The lessee is responsible for returning the car in the same state in which it was given to him. However, the lessor must not consider what has deteriorated due to normal wear and tear or due to a case of force majeure (natural disasters, for example). This is the reason why the inventory of fixtures initially completed is very important:

  • if no new degradation is noted, the tenant and the lessor sign the inventory of fixtures, and the lessor can no longer claim anything,
  • if damage has been caused, the repair costs are the tenant’s responsibility, according to the options subscribed.

In case of dispute:

  • it is up to you to establish that you are not the cause of the damage;
  • the lessor will report the new damage to the inventory. State your disagreement before signing;
  • do not forget to collect a copy of the completed and signed inventory.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO RETURN THE VEHICLE OUTSIDE OPENING HOURS?

In general, the lessor does not object. He will give you the directions to follow (parking, letterbox). But be careful, in this case, there will be no inventory, which involves risks: how to defend yourself if the lessor accuses the damage, even if it occurred after the return of the vehicle?

  • Check the liability issues because generally, the rental company provides that you remain responsible for the vehicle until the keys are handed over, or the agency opens;
  • Remember to take a few photos to have proof, even if nothing replaces a proper inventory …
